Formation Programs

LIST OF YOUTH MINISTRY FORMATION PROGRAMS

“All in all, there is a richness found in Filipino Catholic youth ministry, marked by a holistic development on the part of Filipino youth… The development of young leaders, the flourishing of vocations, the overall growth and progress of the young—these are all evidences of a strong and dynamic ministry for and with Filipino youth.”

KA-LAKBAY, p. 30

“Youth ministry takes this opportune time in the life of the individual for total and integral formation that not only focuses on faith but on all other aspects of growth as well.”

KA-LAKBAY, “Youth ministry is concerned with the growth of the total person”, p. 84-85

One manifestation of this richness is the availability of formation programs, as well as the general valuing for the formative aim and impact of youth ministry activities.

The Episcopal Commission on Youth, through its Secretariat, prepared the following list of youth ministry formation programs that have been created and made available through the years. Youth ministers are invited to be familiar with this list in order to enrich their awareness about the formative component of the ministry, to explore possibilities for the formation of their young people and even themselves, and to empower themselves through networking with like-minded groups and resource persons.

This list will be updated regularly, with the creation of new programs or discovery of existing ones which are not yet filed with the ECY. Therefore, sharing information about these with the ECY Secretariat will be highly appreciated.

Note: The programs are listed as follows:

UNANG HAKBANG

Episcopal Commission on Youth, 2005

The program title, Unang Hakbang, highlights youth ministry as a journey. In this journey, we hope to be guided by KA-LAKBAY, the Church document for the Philippine Catholic youth ministry. In this same journey, this formation program serves as a significant step, one of the first steps we take towards a more meaningful, vibrant, and concerted youth ministry.

Unang Hakbang desires to synergize efforts and initiatives in youth ministry. At the end of the program, the ECY (as creator of both the directory and this formation program) hopes that the participating youth ministers:

  1. Imbibe the contents and the spirit of KA-LAKBAY;
  2. Become fully aware of one’s paradigms and those paradigms important for a renewed ministry, and grow into understanding and ownership of this document;
  3. Together with his/her fellow youth ministers, have a common language and orientation for youth ministers and for all others involved with the young.

UNANG HAKBANG – FACILITATORS SEMINAR / WORKSHOP (UH-FSW)

Episcopal Commission on Youth, 2007

The ECY, as proponent of UH, desires that the program be made available to as many youth ministers as possible, with the help of the RYCC heads, i.e. Regional Youth Directors, Coordinators and Leaders, “employing a workable and effective system for the running of Unang Hakbang among youth ministers in the country” (cf. NYCC2005 resolution).

Thus, the UH-FSW was created in order to allow for sharing of responsibility (i.e. it should not make the regions dependent only on the national office for resources) and to empower capable and committed youth ministers, initially at the regional level, to conduct the program.

At the end of the UH-FSW, the participants are expected to:

  1. Obtain facilitating skills needed to effectively run the program
  2. Familiarize themselves with the guidelines and process of the system for the UH
  3. Build a community of facilitators within their region
  4. Master the content of KA-LAKBAY and UH

ECY Secretariat, <year>
Ministry to the youth is an ever-relevant ministry in the Church in the Philippines. With the growing presence of young people, both in numbers and in significance, the Church needs more than ever to impart a ministry among them that is relevant and empowering. Through KA-LAKBAY, youth ministers have a guiding document as they accompany the young in the spirit of the Lord towards a full life in Him. YOUTH MINISTRY THAT WORKS
WORKSHOP ON THE PHASES OF FAITH DEVELOPMENT OF THE YOUNG

ECY Secretariat, <year>
Have you ever wondered why a youth activity which you imitated in the other group did not work for yours? Or why your young people do not appear enthusiastic about a program you prepared for them? KA-LAKBAY, the Directory for Catholic Youth Ministry in the Philippines, shows us a concept of faith-development which would serve as a guide in the understanding of young people, hopefully leading to the creation of relevant programs and activities in the ministry among them. A workshop facilitator may share his/her insights on this concept and guide the participants in crafting proposals for their respective ministries.

BEYOND KA-LAKBAY

Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB, <year>
A workshop to highlight the enduring value of the DCYMP, and the constant challenge to “launch out into the deep”

Beyond KA-LAKBAY is a workshop intended to instill in the participants a sense of continuity in youth ministry, meaning to say that there is still always something “more” or “beyond” KA-LAKBAY—both as a book and as a formation program. As Filipino Catholic youth ministers, the challenge for us is indeed to go further and beyond, or to go the extra mile in our youth ministry, with the KA-LAKBAY continually accompanying us; in other words also, KA-LAKBAY is truly meant to have with it a “spillover” or “carryover” effect into our lives as youth ministers.

(Open to participants who are at least familiar with KA-LAKBAY.  Having a copy of the book would be very helpful.)
